Introducing the Unola (double melodica): Music for a Found Harmonium
I wrote an article going into more detail of how I made it here: melodicaworld.com/the-unola-a-mirrored-double-melodica T
There were several people contributing their unique talents:
David Brancazio - www.doctormelodica.com
Daniel Schlierenzauer - danielschlierenzauer.com
Enrique Melin - blackhorseworkshop.co.uk/people
Fallen and Felled - www.fallenandfelled.co.uk
Tom Connolly - www.irishbones.com
Melodica World Forum - melodicaworld.com
Blackhorse Workshop - blackhorseworkshop.co.uk
The music is 'Music for a Found Harmonium', and the bit in the middle is a theme and variation on Caprice No. 24 in A minor by Niccolò Paganini.
The body is made from a slice of an old tree which fell down in Soho square on April 22nd 2022. The keys are made from Irish cattle bones and Indian ebony wood to represent the elders who landed me here in London.
I’ve developed a new keyboard system - the left hand keyboard is a mirror of the right, just like our hands naturally mirror each other. That means once I can play something with one hand, I can already play it with the other hand, by using the same movements.
I recorded the track at my home studio - if you want to learn more about setting up a home studio, I have a website which can help: soundref.com

Learn to play like a pro with the NEW Melodica Lessons Book: geni.us/QF0A I've made an instrumental cover of one of my favourite Indian songs, 'Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai', translated as 'I See God in You'. I think the melodica sounds in this Indian/Bollywood genre - the sound has similarities to the Indian harmonium, which is also a reed instrument. MUST READ: Buying a Melodica in 2021: melodica...
I Made My Own Melodica! Making a musical instrument

Learn to play like a pro with the NEW Melodica Lessons Book: geni.us/QF0A When I started out on this quest to make this musical instrument, I had zero design or technical skills. The most I'd ever done was try to put a shelf up, and that didn't go well. So I made a long term plan. I started with an evening woodwork class, then I took some design lessons with an engineer, studied with an accordi...

13 MELODICAS comparison review (inc. Hohner melodica soprano)
As a kid, I attempted to learn several instruments and was always confronted with the same “you have to learn music notation” brick wall. Always turned me off. I get that it’s important, but I didn’t see why it was MORE important than getting a basic skillset on the instrument first. “Hey! I want to learn how to ride a bike!” “Great! First, let’s study maps for 6 months so you know where you’re going…”
Tengo el Vintage Hohner soprano 1:56 lo compré en un tianguis, estaba indecisa si compralo hasta que el señor que lo vendía me ofreció una buena oferta y no lo pensé más. Tiene un sonido genial.
Bro that blind test left me thinking about how they both sound bad.
It’s like a reverse accordion
I like Suzuki M37, Angel Melodyhorn 37, Vintage Hohner Alto and all Vintage instruments. "Vintage" tone of this instrument is the most beautiful for my ears.
Great and excellent work. Thank you for the inspiration
Thanks:-)
I cannot stand them, irritating noise!
lol, maybe it’s a bit of an acquired taste :-)
I just bought the book 😮
Thanks! If you need help with anything, post on this forum: melodicaworld..com
hi, have you thought of the idea of a free reed bagpipe that uses an under the arm bellow pump? i think it would be remarkable to build such an instrument, with the possibility to sing ontop of its sound kind of like a harmonium melodica thing
Great idea! I think we’re moving into piano accordion territory here maybe??
Great video and very helpful. I want to add it to my instrument box in my studio. I use this to add colour to recordings. Great playing by the way!
Thanks, yes a great instrument to add a bit of live texture
I like the arrangement of having the keys for one hand mirror the keys for the other hand.
It took a while to get the hang of, but I’m pleased with it too :-)
Wow. This is a love story.
Even loves has its ups and downs though, this is more of the romanticised story!
@@MelodicaWorld Well said. I guess I'm referring to the kind and loving energy exuding from your presence, no matter what you do.
I was given a hohner Alto in 1970 at the age of twelve Still got it and works fine. Thanks for the videos.
Fun video, you seem like a really happy dude. Do you bend notes the same way you bend with harmonica? By sorta changing the shape of your mouth?
I’ve never been able to bend a note by changing mouth shape. Shame!
@@MelodicaWorld How do you bend notes then?
@@91JLovesDisney I’ve never really bothered with bending notes. I can demonstrate it by starting to blow while slowly depressing one of the low keys
@@MelodicaWorld Oh, my bad. I thought you bent a note in the video. Thanks!
@@91JLovesDisney Sometimes it sounds like I’m bending a note when I play the note above it really quickly and quietly, then go back to the original note. I do that quite a lot - give it a go!
I can definitely hear a qualitative difference in sound. But a $300x better difference? Nah...
I've now seen the forever most underrated invention ever! This will positively not get the attention it deserves from the world. LOL! Amazing! I say this because I believe the melodica is easily the most underrated instrument, and now this is over the top.
It’s quite a niche interest!
Great! Seeing you playing melodica I too purchased. After using for a while liquid comes out of the Melodica and sometimes the notes do not sound properly due to liquid accusation on them. Please guide how to deal with this. Should I open the Melodica always after playing and clean?
Press the button at the end of the keyboard and blow, this should remove most of the moisture. You can give it a little shake too and do it again
Piano 26 ! God✨please look upon Augustus Pablo !
WOW! Okay, after getting over the lovely to look at and lovely to hear -- I am so curious about the symmetry between the keyboards. Is it symmetrical in the instrument, so the lowest notes are on the thumb side on both keyboards? Did you try a version like a divided single keyboard, so the low notes on the left hand are near its little finger?
Yes it’s completely symmetrical. I thought about the folded piano style but wanted to try this first!
Сколько слов !
So, I have a melodica of the type pictured in your video at 12 seconds in, and have found nothing explaining proper fingering. I suspect it is meant to be played with 4 fingers and the thumb underneath (as in this video: ua-cam.com/video/sNn3sN1GDoM/v-deo.html), and not the way I learned how to play a piano. All the videos I've seen have a melodica with an actual piano keyboard on it, often with a tube extension so you can lay it flat before you. Do you have any videos with this type of melodica?
I don’t have any instructions for these melodicas. But I play them with just the right hand, holding the melodica with the left. This way you treat the white buttons as white keys and black buttons as black keys. You can the follow my normal instruction videos. While these melodicas look great, they can be awkward to play
I've seen a few variations on UA-cam. One braced it with their left and played like a piano on the right. Another had thumbs under and played the melody line with the right and the bass with the left. And I've seen others who use a combo of both hands with thumbs under. I have my mothers who had it growing up in school, but doesn't remember how they were told to play it. I'm surprised I haven't seen more out there. I think I'm going to have to look at scales and come up with a series of thumb positions you move through as you play with your four fingers. I'll keep googling. Maybe there are some vintage instruction manuals that show how the company envisioned it. Thanks for your quick reply! I also like your Unola. I'm assuming it's one of a kind and can't be obtained anywhere. It seems we are approaching concertina territory with buttons on each hand to play melodies, although we can just blow air in rather than having to pump like an accordion.
Liquid acculates in melodica and comes from drain hole is that normal. Please guide
Yes that’s how it workd
Thank you for this video!! I didn't see the Juvale brand online. Do you know something that is comparable in sound?
Sorry, I don’t. Try somethings else in the same price range.
what tune is that at 9:00? And please index it for all to hear. It is an incredible application of the vibrandoneon.
It’s a tune I recorded for TV use quite a while ago. Maybe I should upload it here!
@@MelodicaWorld Please do. It is really neat.
Claviola is beautiful.
One of a kind!
Is that melodica? I don't find anything about of pianica?
It’s a melodica but Yamaha calls it a pianica!
Well done sir
I just got one of these, it's great! I have the Suzuki Pro 37 v2 but it's heavy and larger than other melodicas and it's hard to hold with or without the strap (I think the strap is badly located). The Yamaha is light and easy to hold (I do use the strap) and it has a very nice sound (the Suzuki is shrill. From the aluminum housing?). I have three Yamaha guitars and they're all very well made as is the P-37-D. Great melodica! I really like the internal spit valve, no more running to the bathroom sink when I'm done playing.
Glad to hear you’re getting on well with the Yamaha!
I love the symmetry and duality of the instrument.
호너의 멜로디카 음색도 다양하고 모두 갖고 싶네요 다앙한 악기를 비교하며 볼 수 있어서 너무 좋았습니다
Jah Bless You!!!
DAMN that is hard !
I have to admit it took a bit of practice!
@@MelodicaWorld like a 20 years of practice ??
@@bluedragontoybash2463 probably just 10 :-)
I have the suzuki melodeon m37
how do i transcript songs into melodica notes?
If you can find the sheet music for the song you’ll be able to play it on the melodica if it has the same note range (doesn’t go too high or low for your melodica). Or instead, slow down the song on UA-cam and work out which notes are being played by ear. Pause when you hear a new nite, and match it on your melodica. It takes practice but you get faster the more you do it
Beautiful work of art.
Thanks for the appreciation :-)
Thanks :-)
How you do so nice vibrato while playing the longer notes? Sounds so good.
Thanks, yes I think it makes a lot of difference to the sound. I go through how to do it in detail here: ua-cam.com/video/gDE_sdf1K44/v-deo.htmlsi=9qeJHqji45lQGUj8
I didn't even realize I had watched this before, until I noticed that the last comment was mine. This made tears well up in my eyes. Carry on!
Aww thanks so much. I’ll definitely do more!
love the duet at the end
The artistry of both the making and playing. Just wow.
Really appreciated this review! I have a secondhand melodica that was found in the toy section of a thrift store, and this helped me figure out that it was actually a P37D! Unfortunately it didn't come with a mouthpiece or a blow pipe, but it's still fun to try playing it regardless. I did ask my local music store if they could order replacement parts, and they checked with their suppliers at Yamaha but were told that they aren't available for the P37D. I know replacement parts for the P37E are more readily available, but I wonder if the same mouthpiece and blow pipe will fit the P37D? Either way, thank you for the video and excellent melodica resources on the channel!
I imagine it would fit as they’re nearly identical. But many players choose to play with no mouthpiece at all!
Fantastic! Fantastic instrument, fantastic playing!!
Fantastic comment! Thanks so much
So excited for more content!!!!! Are you ever going to do stuff with bass melodicas?
Hmmm, I haven’t played a bass melodica for some time…..
I got a melodica for chrismas and your lessons are helping me learn how to play it thank you so much
Wow. That’s so nice to hear. Thanks for your feedback :-)
I never knew I needed a video on building a very big melodica set to a performance of a Penguin Café Orchestra tune on said melodica in my life, but apparently I did, and I'm glad it's there now.
My Double Lyre works on a similar principle. Mirrored tuning. If my left hand knows, so does my right. I often play chords with the left and melodies with the right. ua-cam.com/video/xoFO-esjNuk/v-deo.htmlsi=gdS9ys-rRpwbe14Z
Wow, love it, sounds great
Wow, I've gone from sceptical to sold in much less than the length of the video. I love it.
Thanks, glad you like it :-)
What a great instrument! Congratulations.😎👍
Many thanks!
Great work Darren 😊
